Ulu Kai Cottages

Most of our elegant, eco-friendly cottages are built of bamboo and glass. They are roughly 450 sq. ft. and designed with lots of screens to welcome the tropical breeze. Enjoy the peace and stunning beauty of ocean views, and starry sky... and the comfort of a private cottage.

Cottages are set up with:
     • 1 king or 2-3 twin beds (your preference)
     • Really comfortable memory foam mattresses, sheets and towels
     • Private bath/shower
     • Mini fridge
     • Drinking water jug with dispenser valve

     • Ceiling fans, screens, and warm Hawaiian breezes, (no air conditioning)

Cottages can accommodate up to 3 people and are currently being booked by the Permaculture and Yoga Retreat Center at Kalanimua. You can make arrangements here: https://www.kalani.com/lodging. For other questions email us at info@ulukaihawaii.com.

Details

Please see our Getting Here page.

Connectivity: WiFi is intermittently available in the guest cottages. Mobile phone reception (mostly just AT&T) is also variable. This is your perfect opportunity to get away from it all!

Food Options: We have plenty of greens, but currently no food operation. Other than a small refrigerator, we do not have kitchen facilities in the cottages. There is food available at Kalapana (5 miles) and in the town of Pahoa (15 miles).  For more information about dining and shopping, please see our Puna Dining page.

Food in Cottages: We live in the tropics: Refrigerators are the only safe place for food!

Drinking Water: We provide a large jug of drinking water in each cottage. We don't recommend drinking the tap water, though it's fine for brushing your teeth. We recommend that you bring a refillable water bottle to carry water with you; we discourage bringing water sold in small plastic bottles.

Housekeeping: The cottage for your stay will be all set up with fresh linens. If you need anything, just check with the office.

Mindfulness: We care about things like recycling and light pollution. Quiet hours are between 9 pm (Puna midnight!) and 7 am. To help maintain a peaceful retreat environment, walk and talk softly, and close doors gently, remove shoes.

Boundaries:  We share an entrance and boundary with the adjacent property, Kalani Honua. Check in at Hale Aloha (at the entrance) for Kalani Honua pool passes, yoga classes, E-dance, and other activities.
The Property

Ulu Kai is brand new, but with an illustrious backstory. The property was once part of Kalani Oceanside Retreat (also known as Kalani Honua), which for forty years was an internationally recognized nature, culture, and wellness retreat center. Thousands of people have had wonderful experiences on this land.  In 2018, when Pele's volcano erupted and rearranged the landscape of lower Puna, the lava took not only highways and forests and houses, but added challenges that the retreat center could not overcome, so it had to shut down for a while. The original Kalani Honua property, on the right side of the map below, has since changed hands, and we are good neighbors.

The front of the property contains the cottages, which are located in ocean-facing meadows. Behind them are tropical forest, fruit orchards, and gardens. The map below shows the front of the property.

The name 'Ulu Kai reflects the interwoven abundance of the land and sea.  In an evolving 21st century world, we seek to nurture a mindful permaculture community in which people can grow and thrive in balance with nature and each other. With discernment, honesty and compassion, we transform and evolve ourselves, and hold space for others to do likewise. Our goal is a balanced life and community that contributes to a more balanced world.
